Description and Features

Students apply lower elementary mathematics to non-routine problems.

Description and Features

This 325-page book develops investigative, analytical, and explanatory skills as well as a variety of quantitative and spatial relationships that are an essential part of the foundation of mathematics.

Students who successfully complete this book will see gains in vocabulary development, observational skills, and the ability to process mathematical concepts on a much higher level. The activities are arranged in six sections which address six major strands in the elementary mathematics curriculum.

Number and Numeration
Discussion and analysis of counting, comparison, and numeration.

Geometry
Description, classification of shapes, composition of figures, and elementary spatial sense.

Operations
Builds on number and numeration using conceptual development of addition, multiplication, and subtraction. Applies these operations in problem solving.

Measurement
Integrates number and geometry concepts using length and area.

Relations
Uses order, number patterns, and functions to explore number relations.

Tables and Graphs
Involves organizing, displaying, and using data in a variety of formats.

My daughter said she's never found a math book that gave her the challenge and satisfaction of this one. The structure and format of the book really made sense to her, and it covers what she needs to know at her grade level.

I teach algebra and the graphing of linear equations to 3rd and 4th graders. Mathematical Reasoning reflects what is good in teaching and learning and proves that what I am doing is appropriate and indeed the most intelligent way to proceed.

We use this book…several times a week. [My] students love to figure out the problems. Many of the problems are similar to those found on standardized and I.Q. tests.

Traditional curriculums teach basic math skills, but the child often misses the underlying meaning of the skills. These books fill that gap by teaching the basic concepts behind the skills.

What it all boils down to is a big book of 282 pages that you can use to practice virtually every elementary math skill. Even topics like symmetry, of which you see very little in typical math texts, are covered.

Traditional math curriculums teach basic math skills, which of course are necessary, but the child often misses the underlying meaning of the skill. These books fill that gap by teaching the basic concepts behind the skills.…The activities are fun and not too time-consuming, so students enjoy them while they are learning. The Guides give answers and extensive discussions for the activities.…[T]hey will be a great help.

Lessons are challenging, combining visual spatial skills, logic, math, and verbal skills. An underlying goal is preparation for the thinking skills necessary for abstract high school-level math.
