Description and Features

No extra cost, easy-to-use activities teach physical science and develop scientific thinking!

Description and Features

The fun, hands-on physical science lessons/experiments in this 312-page book teach science principles found in state and national science standards.  Students also learn and practice critical thinking through the application of the scientific method of investigation. Each activity is a 10- to 30-minute guided experiment in which students are prompted to verbalize their step-by-step observations, predictions, and conclusions. Reproducible pictures or charts are included when needed, but the focus is inquiry-based, hands-on science.

Preparation time is short, and most materials can be found around the classroom. Step-by-step procedures, questions, answer guidelines, and clear illustrations are provided. Practical applications at the end of each activity relate science concepts to real-life experiences. These activities can be used successfully with a minimum of science knowledge, preparation time, and science equipment.

Developing Critical Thinking through Science is based on the premise that students apply thinking skills to learning science concepts and principles by:
Doing through direct, firsthand experiences in an interactive, open atmosphere;
Constructing by building their knowledge through guided inquiry;
Connecting by relating their learning to the world around them.

To help students learn science, four major educational themes are promoted in this book:

  1. Science can and should motivate students toward learning and toward developing curiosity about the world in which they live.
  2. Science is viewed as an active process of developing ideas, or "storybuilding," rather than as static bodies of already-existing knowledge to be passed on to students. Instead of merely describing what is taking place, the teacher guides the students through an inquiry process by asking pertinent, open-ended questions and by encouraging investigative process through demonstration, hands-on opportunities, and extension of experiments.
  3. Students are encouraged to observe and describe their observations accurately and completely using scientific terminology. Scientific terms are defined, demonstrated with concrete examples, then applied and reinforced throughout the activities.
  4. An open, interactive atmosphere in the classroom is essential. Students and their teacher actively investigate ideas together (compared to a passive learning situation in which students are merely told the problem, given the answers, and expected to memorize the information.)

Through observation, hands-on participation, and verbalization of the physical and thought processes, students build a more concrete understanding of the concepts taught in the activities. With the teacher's help, students can learn to apply these same analytic and problem-solving skills to their other studies and to any classroom or social problems that might arise.

My children are really understanding concepts like air pressure, molecules, states of matter, etc. I've used a couple of other programs, but this has been the best!

A thorough, hands-on approach to the true scientific method. The transfer skills are incredible. Even after our first lesson students were saying, 'That's not an observation. You're just giving an opinion. That's an inference and not a fact.' I'm happy to recommend these books.

The critical thinking questions in each activity are excellent. I need help guiding my students through science projects, and they have scripted out thought-provoking questions that will help my students learn. I am delighted.

This is one of the only hands-on science books I've used where all the experiments worked perfectly.

We love the Critical Thinking through Science books and would recommend them to anyone to help students understand science. They are truly hands-on books for the 'non-hands-on'er.'

So you don't know nuttin' about science. So you don't have a lot of time to do science. So you don't have a lot of fancy equipment. 'So what?' With the help of Developing Critical Thinking through Science you'll have 80 step-by-step science experiments covering 17 science areas.The experiments are [e]asy to use, lots of good 'thinking' questions, and lots of good answers."

I am SO impressed with this material! I wish I'd had it sooner. Preparation time is minimal and what's required is very reasonable and achievable. The activities invariably lead to more discussion and practical application of the principles demonstrated. Its not just my 15- and 11-year-olds who are learning. I am, too!! I am SO, SO impressed!!!!! We love it!!!

Combines hands-on learning with two key elements, critical questioning, and practical application, to guide children in their investigative learning and help them connect what they're learning to the world around them.
