In my experience, sometimes it can be more difficult to teach your children something that comes naturally to you. I have found this to be true when teaching my children writing and composition. Building Writing Skills: Essential Tips & Techniques from The Critical Thinking Co. has been a HUGE help in this area! As with most of the books from this publisher we have used, Building Writing Skills is an open-and-go resource. The directions and explanations are clear and consice. You can work through this book however you wish since as it is supplemental and not a stand-alone writing program. I would recommend using this workbook after your child has a strong grasp of grammar and mechanics, and is ready to build upon those basics. My 17 year old didn't seem to mind completing the exercises and felt that he did get a lot out of them. I call that a win!

Any program that can have EJ writing and not complaining about it is a good start. One like Building Writing Skills – Essential Tips & Techniques that has him learning how to make writing more interesting is a plus in my book. I found that he was smiling a lot as he achieved success in each of the activities and enjoyed using the online thesaurus to look up word choices to improve the sentences and passages. Overall I was very pleased with this supplemental writing course. It kept EJ interested and made him think about how different words can change your writing in such a positive way. I would absolutely recommend Building Writing Skills – Essential Tips & Techniques from The Critical Thinking Co. to other families.

There is a lot covered in this book. This book helps teach your child writing skills, such as choosing the proper voice, vivid verbs to make for a more interesting written piece, alliteration, similes, and more. Each section has a teaching box, and then several activities that reinforce the concept being learned. I really appreciated the repetition for mastery, and my son with high functioning autism really appreciated the varied activities so he didn't get bored doing them.

I was delighted to discover that Building Writing Skills reinforces the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) skills we’ve been building this year. In IEW, the girls have been learning to add dress-ups such as strong verbs and quality adjectives to their writing. Building Writing Skills uses different terms while covering the same concepts: Vivid Verbs and Strong Adjectives. Several pages in the workbook touch on each of these topics. I love the flexibility of Building Writing Skills. It offered a smorgasbord of structured writing practice for my girls. Concise explanations of each concept are followed by activities which make it practical. The variety of activity types throughout the book gives it a broad appeal. Students who thrive on pages with puzzles and short fill-ins will find plenty of those. Other pages will also appeal to kids who enjoy diving into dictionaries or dressing up drab sentences. My kids can become very emotionally attached to their own writing. Sometimes this makes it hard for them to make significant changes to improve their rough drafts. Editing and improving sentences in the Building Writing Skills workbook helped them practice the skill without the emotional element.
